Rooms are larger than expected but certainly dated, but that should be expected. Overall a great deal and convenient location
This hotel/"Q" is not cheap, costing more than nearby Marriotts or Sheratons.
The "Q" was built in 1906, and while roomy, with huge 2 room suites, it is definitely ageing, clean but a little musty. Absolutely typical few-frills military type accommodations. Free Wi-Fi, coffee maker, 2 TVs (one didn't work) and a nice breakfast is included, with friendly and helpful staff.
There is a definite lack of published information , either on the website or in the room information booklet, for two glaringly obvious guest needs, specifically:
Guest services: an on-call shuttle service will take you to/from the airport or Metro station. Clearly, some guests don't have cars. Some guests are obviously there to attend funerals at Arlington (ANC). I discovered a shuttle ride to the cemetery can be requested, after I had rented a car for a day.
Our suite is fantastic! And the hotel staff has been extremely helpful in answering our questions and I love the complimentary shuttle service.
b) written Information for moving about/in/off base is totally lacking. Answers are offered (when asked) at the front desk. The accuracy of the answers depends on the individuals behind the desk, all of whom (with the exception of the manager) are not fluent in English. Knowledge of ID/entry/directions is spotty at best.
Recommendation:
b) a higher fluency bar for front desk agents;
a) printed handout with information/map for Arlington funeral attendees, through the Chapel Gate directly into the ANC and to the visitor center, with the existing public road-directions as a back up;
c) written information re. use of public transportation - taxi, Uber, Lyft - and base entry/pick-up/drop-off requirements is non-existent. Answers are as in b) above, verbal. I was fortunate to have the pleasant and helpful English speaking manager behind the desk when I asked about Uber. Unfortunately, I misunderstood the terminology: I was informed "some" Uber drivers are permitted to enter the base, "if" they pass a "background check". I understood this to mean "some" drivers had been 'cleared' as with a security clearance. Wrong! In hotel terminology, 'background check' simply means a form that must be filled out at the Main Gate (ONLY the main gate). "Some" drivers apparently have been turned away. After arriving at a different 'non-main' gate in a Uber car and having to walk back to the hotel, I discovered (by questioning the military gate guard), that ALL Uber/Lyft drivers can enter the base (Main Gate Only) and drive you to the hotel by filling out the forms (again, apparently "some" have been denied access).
c) printed information handouts for guests without cars explaining base access using taxis/Uber/Lyft.
a) information for funeral attendees: when asked, the front desk will give you a printed sheet of written directions (along city roads) to the Arlington main gate (not a map), and a printed map of Arlington, with very little marked (e.g. the visitor center where most funeral events begin). No mention is made that there is a gate close to the hotel that provides direct access to the ANC without ever getting into traffic (DC traffic can be ridiculous).
Not much parking, no pots, pans, dishes or silverware. Bed is not very comfortable, main door to the room and bathroom door was difficult to close. Only a few hangers and no drawer space for clothes, but on a positive note there was a nice robe in the room and it's furnished nicely. Oh, and the staff is nice!
I am a military retiree. I selected this hotel because it was convenient for attending a funeral at Arlington. I thought it was a VOQ (visiting Officer's Quarters) when I called. It is/was, but now privately owned - curious on a military base that requires ID to access (or some kind of paperwork check at the main gate (ONLY the main gate - more later).
While planning a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, I saw the great reviews for the IHG Army Hotel in Wainwright Hall. We stayed two nights and found the reviews to be accurate. The room was very clean. I don't give that compliment lightly, the housekeeping staff deserves credit for doing such a great job. Our room had everything we needed including the convenience of a mini fridge and microwave in a little kitchenette area. The complimentary breakfast included made to order items which was a nice bonus. The location is perfect for visiting Arlington. With military ID, you can use the gate by the Old Post Chapel to access the cemetery. We visited my father's grave and then walked to the metro station to tour more of Washington. As stated in other reviews, food options are limited unless you get in your car and leave the base. That was not a problem though as restaurants are within a short drive. The base is nice to walk around and the hotel is surrounded by historic officer's quarters with a view of the Washington monument. A great place to stay!
