I love going to this park and letting him run til he drops to the ground. He even protests and throws his body down to stay and not go home. He loves it. Nice people there too.

This park has the potential to be really great, but it needs some serious work to get there. The fence along the water side is only about three feet high, which most dogs could easily jump should they feel like it - saw one do just that while I was there today, which caused other dogs to become frantic, making me nervous that they (or even my own pup) might go over the top. Unfortunately, the owner of the escapee seemed unconcerned. There are also a number of badly worn gates on that side with gaps large enough for small dogs to fit through.

The purpose of a dog park is to provide a safe, enclosed space for socialization and exercise. This is especially important in an area where many dog park visitors do not have their own yards. The dog park in shirlington provides a beautiful and unique space for dogs and their people. That said, I have serious pet safety concerns, and would urge the city or park sponsors to put money into updating and enhancing the park in ways that would alleviate these issues.

We enjoy having a nice off- leash dog park with an attached option that goes down to the water. The water is runoff so it can contain higher levels of bacteria (they have signs up and it's posted on their website) so you can decide if you want to let your dog in. If not, the park is big enough for large dogs to stretch their legs. Most owners are pretty observant.

Finally, the park is so long - and with most dogs in the area not very good at recall - that it’s an easy thing to have an overexcited pet run out of sight. I would suggest a fence and gait in the middle to split the long space into two slighter shorter spaces in order to promote an environment more conducive to safe pet interactions and human supervision.

Wonderful public dog park! A wide paved path make it handicap and stroller accessible, stretches approx 1/4 mile along the stream, great for dogs/people meeting daily step goals! Beloved by the community with an active volunteer presence tending to the daily upkeep and vigilantly advocating to preserve this public amenity from county priorities and state requirements. It's a community managed dog park and welcomes volunteers and donations for poo-bags.

I live in North Carolina but visit family in New Jersey a lot. We always stop at this dog park along the way. It’s beautiful, big, and well-maintained. The people who frequent it obviously take a lot of pride in their community. It’s a gem that I’m glad to have stumbled upon!
